A vaginal yeast infection is caused by a type of yeast called candida albicans. Candida is a type of fungus that normally lives in your digestive system. Yeast is actually beneficial, because it helps digest food. Candida albicans normally lives in your intestines and colon. But in women with an overgrowth of candida albicans in the vagina, the levels of good bacteria are low, and this allows the yeast to grow. The growth of candida albicans may cause some problems, such as a vaginal discharge, itching, irritation or burning, and even more serious problems, such as pregnancy.

Women who are pregnant are more likely to have a vaginal yeast infection during pregnancy, especially later in the pregnancy [11]. In fact, some doctors think that vaginal yeast infections are the number one reason why pregnant women have painful sexual intercourse [12].

A vaginal yeast infection is a common condition that affects millions of women every year and is not usually severe. But it can result in some problems, including painful intercourse, itching or irritation, discharge, vaginal odor, and painful urination.
