Smart cards can be authenticated against Active Directory using attribute mapping. This method involves having an Active Directory bound system and setting appropriate matching fields in the file /private/etc/SmartcardLogin.plist. This file must have world-readable permissions to function properly. The following fields in the PIV Authentication certificate can be used to map attributes to corresponding values in the directory account:
As soon as the Mac is configured, a user simply inserts a smart card or token to create a new user account. They are prompted to enter their pin and create a unique keychain password that is wrapped by the encryption key in the smart card. Accounts can be configured for network user accounts or mobile user accounts.
Smartcards with physical chip contacts are commonly used for security and authentication applications. The CCID (Chip Card Interface Device) USB protocol allows a smartcard to be connected to a computer via a card reader using a standard USB interface.
There is much greater variation in the extent to which standards are supported by contactless card readers, therefore is it even more important that reader compatibility is checked with the specific application.
IT administrators can set up their Windows domain to allow YubiKeys to be used as smart cards for login to connected Windows systems. Use the YubiKey Manager for Windows, which includes both a Graphical User Interface and a Command Line Tool to create PIN Unlock Keys (PUK)s on YubiKey devices for customers that require the use of a PUK.
The YubiKey Smart Card Minidriver enables users and administrators to use the native Windows interface for certificate enrollment, managing the YubiKey smart Card PIN, and smart card authentication on Windows.
NOTE: Use the YubiKey Manager to configure both the SmartCard (PIV) functionality of the YubiKey as well as all other YubiKey applications. With this application you only need to install one configuration software for your YubiKey. Note that the Security Key Series are FIDO devices only, if you want to use a YubiKey as a PIV Smartcard then refer to the other types of YubiKeys available.

I am having trouble installing drivers for a Smartcard and Reader drivers on my late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB Flash Drive. Are there any firewall or other settings I must set or reset to accomplish this?
Thank you for your reply but it does not answer my question. Mac OS does have drivers for most everything but for business requirements one needs to install equipment and drivers that are generally used.
So, my question is still, for those devices, how do I install the drivers? I was able to install them up through OS X Yosemite but after I updated to El Capitan these devices have become inoperable, requiring reinstallation of drivers for El Capitan.
To install drivers is the same as installing any other software in El Capitan. You download the software to your hard drive. If it is a zip file, you unzip the file. If it is a disk image, you open the disk image. If it has an installer, run the installer. If it does not have an installer, you typically drag the file to the applications folder.
