The landscapes in this mountainous region are mostly barren and poor. This has been the fate of the poverty-stricken villages of the Yi minority group for generations. In the past, the majority of them relied on farming and animal husbandry for their subsistence, and had to travel long distances to other villages to sell their products. They would watch the state forestry department trucks coming in and take advantage of the free transport to gather firewood and water at distant forests. Every once in a while, these villagers would be rewarded by the state with subsidies for buying seeds and fertilizer. At the same time, they were also burdened with taxes. The villagers had no choice but to work in the government-owned factories, because there were no other employment opportunities in the region. Each year the villagers would have to spend their earnings on the costs of their own medical treatment and drug treatment for leprosy. The government-owned hospitals had no capacity to treat the patients, so they had to stay in the local county hospital for a long time. The most desperate ones might have to stay in the county hospital for over two years for treatment. All those exigencies shattered the traditional cultural style of this region. They could not grow enough food for their families, and relied on the government for all their needs. Of course, they were more vulnerable to being drafted into the army and made slave soldiers, which has been the fate of the Yi minority for centuries. The government-owned factory was the only place where they could earn a living. But when the global economy crashed in 2008, the government ceased to pay wages for this group of people.Hundreds of thousands of people in the region lost their jobs, and could no longer pay their medical bills. They were forced to take advantage of the state-run hospitals and medical centers. The government had to build new dispensaries and hospitals to cope with the mass influx of patients. Over time, the hospitals began to be overwhelmed and the existing facilities became overburdened. The government finally realized the situation and began to transfer some of the patients to other hospitals to give patients the opportunity to seek treatment elsewhere. Dayingpan is a small village of just 7,000 people, but it has the biggest number of leprosy patients in the region. There were over 6,000 patients in this village when the state sent the first batch of patients to other villages.
Less than a week ago, Les Plus Beaux Villages de France announced its 2020 list, and Dayingpan is in the top 10. They also promised to continue to promote the village until they have listed them in the top 10 for the following years.
By the end of the 1950s, most of the houses in the village were built. However, only a few families had reliable income, and it was difficult for them to finish the houses within their budget. The villagers thus started to raise funds for the houses by engaging in construction work in nearby cities. 827ec27edc
