I have one gripe with this book. To be fair, this is not a fault, but a limitation of the study itself. The author claims that the procedure for selecting the texts she studied was in fact quite arbitrary. She only studied those texts which mentioned or depicted femmes fatales in a certain way. This is certainly not a bad thing, but I do miss a comparison of the depictions of femmes fatales in texts which did not mention them at all. This might give the reader a better idea of just how standard the depictions of femmes fatales were.
When it comes to the structure of the book, there's some nice stuff in here. The author has arranged the book into chapters, where each chapter is devoted to a specific representation of a femmes fatale. She then goes on to talk about the role and function of each representation in detail. This is a bit of a problem in that the book is not very well organized. No single chapter is devoted to talking about the depiction of femmes fatales in the Iliad. In fact, the last chapter only mentions the femmes fatales that are mentioned at all in the Iliad, leaving the reader to wonder what is going on in the other chapters.
This book is a good read for anyone who is interested in the depiction of femmes fatales, the relation between social and legal circumstances, the legal atmosphere, and the value of textual criticism. The author discusses a variety of texts and the relevant issues, and provides a well-rounded overall picture of the depiction of femmes fatales in China and Greece.
What's the point behind this research? While Greek texts do indeed contain much more complex representations of femmes fatales than texts from China, the author suggests that this is in fact not because of any increase in complexity or sophistication, but because of the different social and legal circumstances in which Greek texts were composed. The author goes on to explain how the general legal atmosphere and practice in Greece made it permissible to make more complex depictions of femmes fatales. Chinese texts are not only simpler and clearer but also much more clearly a product of a social and legal climate in which the principle of audiatur et altera pars was important. Finally, the author points out that China's stance on femmes fatales in general is much more clearly related to the principle of audiatur et altera pars.
The film is filled with astonishing and fascinating characters; not all of them are anti-American. One of the most compelling is former White House Press Secretary, and former journalist, Tony Snow. Snow is an almost-unrecognizable James Spader, an anguished man, well intentioned but out of step with his times. He nevertheless remains a sympathetic and honest character who in many ways is the victim of his own excellent character traits: his lack of political savvy and his unwavering commitment to the truth. He's the kind of man you can't help root for, even if he does make terrible decisions and gets into some sticky situations. Another astonishing character is a woman who works at a doctor's office by day, and by night is a femme fatale-type who is a member of a murderous gun club. Her presence would make for a fascinating character study on its own, but there is also another serious mystery in the background. It turns out that George H.W. 827ec27edc
