The third step in our study is to replace the free text strings in the procedure descriptors with numerical codes. Before we perform the natural language processing for our data, we converted the free text surgical descriptors into a data structure using a natural language processing algorithm. This data structure contained all the different variations of surgical descriptors as free-text strings. We used the natural language processing algorithm to collapse all variations of surgical descriptors into a single free-text string. We then used this string to transform the procedure descriptors into a numerical code. This numerical code was assigned to each procedure in our data set using a regular expression algorithm.
